About Medical Bracelets

What to engrave on a medical ID bracelet

Keep it short and clear so emergency crews can read it at a glance. Most people include:

  • Your name
  • Medical conditions, such as diabetes, epilepsy or a heart condition
  • Allergies, such as penicillin or bee stings
  • Important medications, such as blood thinners or insulin
  • An emergency contact phone number
Curb, Figaro or anchor chain
  • Curb chain: flat, interlocking links that lie smooth against the wrist.
  • Figaro chain: a pattern of short links broken by a longer link, for a classic Italian look.
  • Anchor chain: oval links with a bar across the center, inspired by a ship's anchor chain, for a sturdy, nautical look.
Finding your bracelet size

ID bracelets come in 6 to 9 inches. Wrap a soft tape measure or a strip of paper around your wrist just above the wrist bone, then add about 1/2 to 1 inch for a comfortable fit.

Sterling silver or 10K and 14K gold

Choose 0.925 sterling silver, 10K gold or 14K gold. Every bracelet is hallmarked 925, 10K or 14K. Our guide to sterling silver vs. 10K vs. 14K gold compares their color, durability, price and care.

Caring for your medical ID bracelet

A medical ID only helps if you wear it, so choose one you are comfortable wearing every day. Clean it with warm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft brush, then dry it with a soft cloth. Sterling silver naturally darkens over time; a silver polishing cloth brings back the shine.

Frequently asked questions

Should I wear a medical ID bracelet?

If you have a condition, allergy or medication that emergency crews should know about, a medical ID can speak for you when you cannot. Ask your doctor whether one is right for you.
