Saint Florian is the patron saint of firefighters. His image appears on fire department patches, badges and firehouse walls, and many firefighters wear a Saint Florian pendant on every call. Here is who Saint Florian was, why firefighters honor him and what to look for in a Saint Florian pendant or ring.
Who was Saint Florian?
Florian was an officer in the Roman army in the province of Noricum, in what is now Austria. According to tradition, he organized and led a brigade of soldiers trained to fight fires.
Florian was a Christian. When he refused to take part in the persecution of Christians under the emperor Diocletian, he was arrested and sentenced to death. In the year 304 he was thrown into the Enns River with a stone tied around his neck. He is honored today as a saint and is the patron of Linz, Austria, as well as of firefighters and chimney sweeps.
Why Saint Florian is the patron saint of firefighters
The best-known story about Saint Florian tells how he saved a burning town with a single bucket of water. That is why he is usually shown as a Roman soldier pouring water over a burning building. Firefighters have honored him for centuries as the protector of those who run toward the fire when everyone else runs away.
May 4: Saint Florian's Day and International Firefighters' Day
Saint Florian's feast day is May 4. The same date is also International Firefighters' Day, when firefighters around the world are honored and those who died in the line of duty are remembered. Many departments mark the day with ceremonies, and it is a meaningful date to give a Saint Florian pendant.
What's on a Saint Florian badge
- Saint Florian himself, usually as a Roman soldier with a bucket of water.
- The fire service cross, often called the Maltese cross, the symbol of the fire service, standing for courage, protection and service.
- Tools of the trade, such as ladders, axes and hoses, on many designs.
Our Saint Florian firefighter pendants can be customized with numbers or letters at the bottom of the badge, such as a badge number, a company number or a city's initials.
